There's a lot to focus on this week! We're keeping our eyes on the Big Picture (an administration with a lust for lies and Russian dealings) as well as the many hateful, destructive acts in play this week. You are the Resistance, and the Resistance is working!

TALKING POINTS :

1= WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S FIRE - AND THERE'S A LOT OF SMOKE! Both of Hawaii’s Senators have made it clear that the comments made by AG Jeff Sessions while under oath cannot be ignored.

  • Just as Flynn had to step down over lying about his Russia connections, so must Jeff Sessions. We demand that all four members of our delegation join the Congressional chorus that Sessions has to go. He lied under oath. As he, himself, said, “No one is above the law.”
  • Sen Schatz said that this administration seems to struggle with the truth. Their lying, obscuring, covering-up, and denying cannot be allowed to become normal, and cannot be continued. We demand that our delegation insist on an independent investigation of the administration’s dealings with Russia and follow the facts where they lead.
  • Russia’s involvement in the US elections is fact. That alone cannot be ignored, and our administration cannot effectively lead this country if they can’t own up to those facts and be part of the solution. Our delegation needs to be part of the loud public and Congressional voice demanding that the election tampering by a foreign government must be fully investigated and stopped. 2018 is just around the corner. We demand fair and sacred elections, free from interference by other countries.

2- THE NEW TRAVEL BAN: New Words but Same Hatred, Religious Profiling, and Destruction. Our delegation members need to be loud in their opposition of this new travel ban and equally zealous in their denouncement of the works of ICE agents and border patrol in breaking up families, detaining people for no apparent reason (including artists, writers, and targeted others), and “demanding papers” - even on domestic flights. We’ve seen this behavior before - in our history books and in nation’s whose leadership looks for total control - and it has nothing to do with American values and American principles.

3- VULNERABLE POPULATIONS MUST BE PROTECTED. “It has nothing to do with bathrooms, just as it had nothing to do with water fountains.” The Virginia Court decision protecting transgender students has been vacated, and these young people are once again the target of hatred and bigotry. We expect our delegation to stand firm in defense of these students, and all those within the LBGTQ community who feel threatened and at risk in this new environment.

4- SCOTUS: The nominee will have Senate hearings soon and is meeting with Senators now. We demand that Senators Hirono and Schatz ask him the tough questions during their informal meetings on his views on things like international interference with elections, Title IX and transgender bathrooms, lying and misleading Congressional hearings when testifying under oath. We also demand that his hearings not continue until we know the extent of the administration’s involvement in the Russian meddling in US elections.

While POTUS deflects and obfuscates, measures are rolling ahead to demolish those things we most treasure: The Administration’s replacement of the ACA is expected this week; the bill to abolish the EPA is pending; DeVos and the GOP legislators are pushing ahead towards vouchers and destroying public education; and Sanctuary Cities are under fire. We expect our delegation to take an active and vocal role in opposing this hate-filled rhetoric and stopping these heinous acts.
