TALKING POINTS :
Once again, a busy week ahead! Our message this week is clear and simple: #NoProbeNoRobe.
It has become increasingly clear that this administration’s key players were colluding with Russia during the campaign. It is as close to treason as we have seen in decades. Until these matters are fully investigated and the truth discovered, we cannot move ahead with a nomination to the Supreme Court that will put Gorsuch - a man who repeatedly sides with big business and against individuals (including students with learning disabilities) - on the bench for life. Both Hawai‘i Senators have voiced their opposition and we must continue to thank them. And then demand that they talk to every Republican they know to bring them to the right side of the table.
As of 4/3 there are 41 votes opposing Gorsuch, sufficient to defeat him under the Senate’s existing rule - that a nomination to the Supreme Court must receive 60 votes. However, Mitch McConnell and the GOP want to “go nuclear” and change the Senate rules so that they only need 51 votes to confirm the nomination. Our message has to be loud and clear. As Senator Schumer continues to say, "Don’t change the rule. Change the nominee." While there’s been plenty of rule changing in the past (on both sides of the aisle), there has always been agreement that something as important as the Supreme Court must have a super majority (60 votes) for confirmation. This is a tradition that must be upheld.
We need moderate Republicans - and Republicans who value country over party - to stand up against McConnell and oppose the proposed “nuclear option” to change the rule. We don’t usually call Senators in other states, but this week, we are. Call them, starting first with those where you have once lived or have family, and then keep going. We stop this nuclear action and we stop this nomination!
2- RUSSIA: FOLLOW THE MONEY, FOLLOW THE SMOKE
They keep falling like dominos, folks associated with the Trump administration are repeatedly being outed for connections with Russia, including the POTUS son-in-law, who now has a cozy West Wing office and is in charge of what seems all things foreign and domestic. Flynn is seeking immunity. The House investigation is a sham and needs to be shut down or taken over by someone other than Nunes. The Senate investigation needs to get moving and get some information in the light of day ASAP. And there needs to be an independent investigation.
We have talked about this every week, and our Senator members’ staffs nod and say they agree. But no one seems to know what to do. WE know what to do - we keep making noise and demanding action until we see results! Call all four members of the Hawai‘i delegation and let them know that you find this Russia situation outrageous and unacceptable, and that it seems unconscionable that this POTUS continues to wreak havoc on our nation while Congress is figuring out what to do about the huge Russian elephant in the room.
3- HEALTH CARE
Two bills are floating about - HR 676 and one that Bernie Sanders is introducing in the Senate - to create a single payer health care system by expanding Medicare to cover all. The bills are new and discussions are just underway. I believe it is not yet time to demand their support - because there’s just not enough info yet to know whether it is possible. However, it is definitely time for a discussion, and we can call all our members and ask them where they are on these bills and this issue. Let them know that we are watching and we are concerned that health care be a priority (and a right) for all of us.
