TALKING POINTS : This week, we will be focusing on budget, healthcare, foreign relations, and the I-words (Investigation and Impeachment).

In all four offices, these are our messages. We want to know what specifically they are doing on each of these issues, what they’ve already done, and what we can expect from them moving forward. We want specifics, not platitudes.

  1. Mueller is the right man for the job, and thank god Rosenstein did what is expected of him at DOJ. Now we demand our delegation to raise their voices on behalf of all of us in Hawai‘i who believe this investigation must be thorough and complete without meddling from the GOP and the WH; that waivers for Kushner and others MUST NOT be granted (and that Sessions keep his hands far, far away); and that any talk that Mueller is conflicted because of his law firm ties be firmly and completely squelched. We want to know how far and wide the corruption spreads and we want anyone within a mile of it out of the WH ASAP. Our delegation cannot sit quietly by while this investigation moves ahead. We expect them to express strong support of its work routinely via social media and regular media, and at the same time, push that the House and Senate investigative committees continue to DO THEIR JOBS too!
  2. Attacks on US soil of US residents by foreign governments WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED. The attacks on peaceful protestors on Washington’s Embassy Row last week by Turkey President Erdogan’s security detail, brutally kicking and hitting and threatening our citizens exercising their right to free speech, is absolutely unacceptable. All members of the delegation must speak forcefully on the issue, condemning it and demanding action by State and the WH. We say this sort of thing never happens on US soil. But it JUST DID. These times are not normal and we are counting on our delegation to continue to call out these atrocities and demand action.
  3. The budget released by the WH is cruel, inhumane, and absolutely unacceptable. With dramatic cuts to everything from medicare, medicaid, CHIP, food stamps, and other programs, this budget denies Americans the programs and lifelines they depend on. This budget must be STOPPED in the Senate, as early as this week. And likewise, the Senate is the only thing standing between us and Trump’s destruction of health care for tax cuts to the wealthy. We expect Schatz and Hirono to stop it dead in its tracks, and demand that the WH not withhold payments due on the ACA in an effort to shut it down at the cost of American lives and health.
  4. The President’s overseas travel must not allow us to slide into complacency. His behavior there is as awful as it is when he’s at home - trading a weapons deal for money to Ivanka’s charity on his first stop, with more atrocities likely to come. Likewise, Tillerson’s press conference without allowing the presence of US media is absolutely unacceptable!  We expect our delegation to be vigilant and call out his behavior via social and traditional media and demand that protocol, ethics, and disclosures remain part of our representation at home and abroad.
