SHOW UP TO SUPPORT MINERVA + HER CHILDREN!!
MINERVA RECEIVED A LETTER TO REPORT FOR HER DEPORTATION ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7 AT 9:00 AM AT THE ICE OFFICE AT 595 ALA MOANA BLVD.
Note from Attorney Clare Hanusz:
Many of you heard Minerva and her daughter Emely speak at a FACE Equity Summit in 2014.
Minerva is a woman from Oaxaca, Mexico. She is the single mother of two children who were born in the US-- Emely, 20 and Daniel, 10. Minerva has lived an worked hard in the US for more than 20 years, most of those years on Maui. Minerva was arrested by ICE agents in 2009 "pursuant to an anonymous tip." She has no criminal history. Her case has been through the immigration court system and she lost her case because we could not show that her removal would result in "exceptional and extreme hardship" on her children. In other words, extreme poverty, lack of educational opportunity and family separation are merely forms of normal hardship. Because the kids are healthy and smart the standard could not be met.
We will be filing another stay of deportation for Minerva on Tuesday. We don't know what decision ICE will make in her case.
We had told Minerva and her children before that if she needs to report to ICE again she will not be alone. It would send a powerful message to Minerva, Emely and Daniel if our community comes to be with her. It would also send a message to ICE that we recognize that families such as Minerva's are part of our community and we support them.
