TALKING POINTS :
1- IMMIGRANTS, DACA, & A PATTERN OF HATE
This is a president who refused to condemn white supremacy, looks to end DACA, continues to push to build a border wall, and is using ICE agents to terrorize law-abiding immigrants across the country. Congress was created to prevent one person from having too much authority and control. We expect our MOCs to exercise that responsibility and stand up to this wave of hatred and abuse. Ending DACA puts at risk the lives of almost a million young people, most of whom grew up in the US, and throw families into turmoil. The recent actions of ICE, requesting the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) destroy records relating to detention and abuse of immigrants is not only a constitutional abuse but is also immoral and hate-fueled. We expect our MOCs to speak loudly against these actions and take whatever legislative action is necessary to stop this abuse of power.
2- CLIMATE CHANGE & HARVEY
What happened in Houston is horrific. And preventable. Intense weather events dominate the news, and yet this administration can’t seem to grasp the root cause. Our MOCs cannot be silent on this administration’s refusal to address climate change in a meaningful way. Again, stand up against this administration and find solutions to put climate change solutions in place now.
3- TAKE CARE OF AMERICA
The president whose hat says Make America Great Again is proposing massive cuts to FEMA, the Coast Guard, and other emergency preparedness programs. The nation’s flood insurance program sits in limbo while thousands of Houston homes sit under water. He clearly doesn’t care about most Americans, but Congress should. Stand up to these immoral and cruel proposals and protect the people you serve.
4- NORTH KOREA
It’s getting worse. On Sunday, our Secretary of Defense used these words: “...the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea…” We know that Mattis is considered the adult in the room now, but where’s diplomacy? Where’s Tillerson? Is military action our only remaining option? And who’s keeping Trump’s fingers off the buttons? Are we one tweet away from full-on war?
